When 'track changes' is on, the equation editor gets screwed up and wont let you save. Accepting all changes, allows for the document to be saved without glitches. This is an inconvenience because this is a working collaborative document, but at least now I can save my work.
- Hi, Are you using the MathType add-in with Word for Mac 2011? It is a third-party product helped with equations editing in Word. In my environment, I have no product in Word to test with and do troubleshooting for the front of it.
- Equation editor microsoft word 2008 for mac keyboard shortcut ms word equation editor shortcuts you word show equation editor 4 ways to insert equations in microsoft.
I've been using MathType Equation Editor to create Equations in Word. They key feature I have been using is the one where you type TeX equation and render it as an equation object. This generates objects that are of 'MathType format'. However, for purposes of submitting my document to a publisher, I was told I need these to be in 'Equation Editor format'. Is there a way to convert from MathType to this format?
I'm not sure what the difference between the formats is. All I did was install the MathType software in the above link and then inserted equations into my Word document using Insert -> Object -> Microsoft Equation Object.
I'm using Mac OS X 10.6.3 with Microsoft Word 2008 (Version 12.0.0).

These are the same format. My company, Design Science, makes the Equation Editor that comes with Microsoft Office on Mac and Windows since 1991 or so. MathType is the fancy version of Equation Editor with lots more features, including the TeX input feature you mention. Your publisher should be encouraged to mention that it accepts both MathType and Equation Editor equations as most publishers do. I suspect they have been getting documents containing MathType equations and handling them just fine all along.
By the way, the next version of MathType will feature compatibility with Mac Office 2011 which is due out later this month. As you may know, Microsoft left out Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) support in Office 2008 but they are bringing it back in this new version. That means MathType will have more commands like it has in Office 2004. In particular, you will be able to insert new equations without going through the Insert Object process.

Equation Editor is a formula editor developed by Design Science that allowsusers to construct math and science equations in a WYSIWYG environment. EquationEditor was developed by Design Science and is included in all MicrosoftOffice versions and several other commercial applications. Itis a simplified version of Design Science MathType. It can be used as a standaloneprogram or it can also be used from within applications thatsupport OLE as an embedded object. Its feature set has not changed significantly since itsintroduction in Word for Windows, version 2.0.
For Microsoft Office 2007, EquationEditor is included as is, however some Office 2007 applicationsalso include a reengineered equation editor with support for a TeX-like linear input/edit languagecalled 'Office Math Markup Language' (Office MathML or OMML) in additionto its WYSIWYG interface. [1] Therevised equation editor is built into the document-editing part ofthe interface rather than being operated through a separate dialogand being treated as an OLE object in thedocument. Unicode Plain Text Encoding of Mathematics is alsosupported. [2]Office Math Markup Language (OMML) is a mathematicalmarkup language embedded in WordProcessingML, with intrinsicsupport for including word processing markup like revisionmarkings, footnotes, comments, images and elaborate formatting andstyles. Equation number management is also possible using macros.

Formatcompatibility
The OMML format is different from the World Wide Web Consortium(W3C) MathML recommendation. Academicpublishers have noted that the rendering of equations as graphicsin .DOCX files impairs its usability for scholarlypublishing as the conversion to and from MathML to OMML whileconverting between DOC and DOCX is notseamless and automatic. [3]Especially, when saving DOC files using Word 2007,equations are rendered as graphics as the older DOC formatas well as older versions of Office do not support OMML, whichprevents editing and flexibly printing the equations. [4] OMML ispartially compatible with MathML through relatively simple XSL Transformations. Word 2007 has supportfor converting equations to/from MathML via the clipboard. [5][6] Copiedequations are in (Presentation) MathML format, so they can be pasted into otherprograms that understand this XML markup, such as Mathematica.Conversely, MathML can also be pasted into a Word document and itwill be recognized as an equation and displayed properly (as longas it does not contain MathML symbolic character entities such as ±— use numeric entities instead). The transformations that allowcopying/pasting equations via MathML are driven by two XSL stylesheets(omml2mml.xsl and mml2omml.xsl). These scripts can be used outsideof Word by reading or manipulating DOCX XML filesdirectly.
